Throughout the "swine flu" period this spring, the state's Department of Public Health has set the expectations for how to handle circumstances in schools. Much of that response has been to build awareness of the symptoms and awareness of how to prevent the spread of influenza-like illness.
These recommendations have been sent home to parents more than once. As we head into the summer break, they are reprinted here.
Monitor your child for signs and symptoms of illness (fever of 100 degrees or more plus a cough, sore throat, or runny nose).
Should any of the above symptoms develop, keep your child home for 7 days after symptoms start or until your child is completely well for a full 24 hours, whichever is longer.
If your child or any family member is ill, please limit contact with others as much as possible.
As always, the best line of defense against illness is proper hand washing. Frequent washing with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be the most effective way to prevent illness. Please consult your health care provider or school nurse if you have related questions. You may also want to visit the Massachusetts Department of Public Health website on influenza:
I hope you and your family have a safe and healthy summer!
As always, if you have any questions about our schools, please do not hesitate to contact a building principal or central office administrator. To contact the Superintendent's Office, you may call 978-921-6100 or email me at
