Beverly Public Schools Strategic Planning Committee
July 15, 2010

Superintendent Marie Galinski and the Beverly School Committee are in the beginning stages of developing a Strategic Plan for the school district.  It is important to determine where the district will be moving in the next few years and how we are going to get there, while understanding the fiscal realities ahead.  It is our goal that the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) includes a wide and diverse representation of the Beverly community, including: parents, school staff and administrators from all levels, alumni, high school students, major benefactors, and business and general community representatives.

There are many ways to be a part of this process.  We are looking for people to serve on the large Strategic Planning Committee, one of 4 working sub-committees, or attend Focus groups that will take place throughout the city early this fall.  The large SPC committee will meet bi-weekly over a 6 to 9 month period beginning in September.

 In addition to the large SPC group, there will be active sub-committees who will be tasked with gathering and reviewing data and information that will be used to help set and prioritize goals and objectives, as well as strategies for achieving them.  Subcommittees, who will also meet bi-weekly beginning in September, will be formed around the areas of investigating:
* Class size;
* Facilities usage;
* Consolidation/outsourcing, and
* Technology.

Please join us in this important endeavor by contacting Donna Bergeron at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it (subject Strategic Planning Committee) before August 10, 2010.  Tell us a little about yourself and on which committee you would like to be placed.  Please include your:
* Demographic background and contact information;
* Role in the community (parent, employee, alumni, business member, etc.);
* Statement of prior school district committee experience;
* Statement of any expertise you have that would be brought to the SPC;
* Availability and commitment for meetings.

LOCAL BHS STUDENT ANNOUNCED AS MASSACHUSETTS STATE DECA OFFICER FOR 2010-2011, A FIRST IN BEVERLY HI
LOCAL BHS STUDENT ANNOUNCED AS MASSACHUSETTS STATE DECA OFFICER FOR 2010-2011, A FIRST IN BEVERLY HISTORY

John M. Tutty Jr., of Peabody, MA was elected to the Massachusetts DECA Officer team at the 51st Annual DECA State Career Development Conference held in Boston on March 4th -March 6th. John will serve on the State Action Team for the 2010-2011 school year. John, a junior at Beverly High School, is the son of Debra and John M. Tutty Sr. John is the first MASS DECA State Officer to hail from Beverly High School.

DECA is a national organization which provides opportunities for students to develop skills and obtain experience in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. By giving students hands-on experiences in the fields of marketing, business and entrepreneurship, DECA enhances the classroom experience by providing conferences and competitions that mold high school students into character-driven leaders. Approximately 3,500 Massachusetts students take part in DECA annually.

Students who run for a state office must turn in an application packet, attend a screening session, receive a qualifying test score and interview with a nomination committee. Candidates who meet all the specific qualifications are able to campaign to members and voting delegates at the conference. Serving as a MASS-DECA Officer provides students with a real leadership experience, a chance to grow as a person and increase their self-confidence. Teamwork and cooperation are essential to the success of any officer team.

“Typically, DECA wants state officers who are socially mature, enthusiastic and possess superior communication skills,” said Megan B. Sudak, BHS DECA Co-advisor. “Kristen Marescalchi (BHS DECA Co-advisor) and I are thrilled John was elected and couldn't think of a more perfect person to represent Beverly High School. He is dedicated, mature and driven and has already made his mark on the Beverly DECA program, as well as the MASS DECA community.”

State officers engage in a number of organizational activities and strategic planning throughout the year. John will take part in State Officer training June 21st–25th, 2010 in Boston. This two-part training is designed to provide each officer-elect with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to be a successful officer. This is also when the officers-elect really come together as a team with common goals and objectives for the year ahead.

Winning a seat on the State Action Team was only one of John's feats during the State Career Development Conference. John received medallions for his third place finishes in his Accounting Applications Test as well as the Economics Test. He received a first place medallion for a perfect score on his second role play of the event. With an overall fourth place finish out of thirty, John qualified for the International Career Development Conference, taking place in Louisville, KY at the end of April.
On an international level, DECA has more than 200,000 members from the United States, Canada, Germany, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is the only student organization that has associations in all 50 states, U.S. territories, and Canada.

“Through active participation in DECA, members apply presentation skills, problem-solving skills and human relation skills to help prepare them for careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship,” Sudak said. “Students in our marketing program foster their understanding of professional expectations and situations that better prepares them for their future, whether in marketing, entrepreneurship or any other communication-dependent career.

John will also be spending five days in Atlanta, GA, attending the Freedom Academy Seminars, through the Foundation for Economic Education. He applied and was granted a scholarship for this exciting opportunity. This seminar will offer a unique opportunity for John to spend a week with other high school students from around the country, learning from highly qualified speakers about the economic perspectives of our world.

Two Beverly High School students were recognized for their work in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards this year.  Senior Tamsin Doherty won a silver key for her acrylic self-portrait painting.  She also won a gold key for her art portfolio.  Junior Rachael Beard won an honorable mention for her sculpture of a Converse sneaker entitled “Stepping Up”.

“Memory Project” works are on exhibit at the Wenham Museum through the month of March.  Students in Mrs. Graczyk’s Advanced Drawing & Painting and Mrs. Borsetti’s A.P. Studio Art have created portraits as part of The Memory Project.  Funded by the PTSO, students received pictures of children living in orphanages throughout the world.  BHS students then created portraits of the children.  These will be delivered to the children through the Memory Project, which is a part of “My Class Cares”.  Color copies of the works are on display at the Wenham Museum in the Student Art Gallery.  For more information go to www.thememoryproject.org

Four Beverly High School students work was on display as part of the Congressional Art Show at Montserrat College of Art.  Tamsin Doherty (Best of School award), Eddie Negron, Rachael Beard and Irene Carrozza were selected to enter their work.

A.P. Art Students have wrapped up their visits to the Peabody Essex Museum (funded by the Beverly Education Foundation).  They are busy working on pieces inspired by these visits to be exhibited at the museum on May 1 & 2, 2010.  The A.P. art class has also been visiting Montserrat College of Art as part of a partnership with the college.  They have finished a series of drawing classes and are now starting an etching class.  Thank you to all of our sponsors who have made these experiences possible.
