Unit of Study: Chapter 1

Standards: The following Math Performance Indicators will be utilized.

o       MCAS 634 ö Construct and interpret stem-and-leaf plots and line plots.

o       MCAS 636 ö Describe and compare data sets using the concepts of median, mean, mode and range.

o       MCAS (Standards 4216) ö Create tables and graphs of patterns to organize information. 

o       MCAS (Standards 4241) ö Construct, read, and interpret tables, graphs, and charts from data.

 

                      The following Technology Performance Indicators will be utilized.

o       1.22 - Describe structure and function of spreadsheet (e.g., cells, rows, columns, formulas) and apply formatting features.

o       1.24 ö Produce simple charts from spreadsheet.

o       3.8 ö Organize information that is collected using a variety of tools (e.g,, spreadsheet, database, saved files).

  Essential Questions: 

                                        How is math used in real world situations?

How do we find a single number that describes the entire set of data?

                                        How do we use visual graphics to organize data?

                                   

Materials Needed:    (2) 8 ¸ä x 11ä white paper, pencil, markers, pens, ruler and computer access.

 

Possible Learning Experiences:  Learn to analyze data and illustrate information.   Learn to utilize other media to research data items. 

 

Assessment Strategies:            

 Level One: Can the student utilize the newspaper and online sites to retrieve data?  Can the student sort data, use formulas and electronically create graphs?  Can the student compile the information onto one piece of paper and present their findings?

  Level Two:  Can the student utilize the newspaper and online sites to retrieve data?  Can the student sort data and use formulas and electronically create a bar graph and others by hand? Can the student compile the information onto one piece of paper and present their findings?

  Level Three:  Can the student utilize the newspaper and online sites to retrieve data?  Can the student sort data? Can the student create graphs by hand? Can the student compile the information onto one piece of paper and present their findings?

  Level Four:  Can the student utilize the newspaper and online sites to retrieve data?  Can the student sort data? Can the student create graphs by hand? Can the student compile the information onto one piece of paper and present their findings?
