The Metric System: Unit Overview

Timeline

This unit is to be completed in one and a half weeks time.  The unit should start with an introduction (PowerPoint) presentation.  At this time the ladder method will be introduced.  Each concept mass, length, and volume should be implemented in two class periods each.  After these three concepts are introduced and mastered a review session will take place and a quiz will be given the following day.

Differentiated Instruction

This unit is tiered by readiness.  Students who grasp this concept quickly will be given a chance to move on to more difficult conversions, two and three step problems.  Students having difficulty may continue to complete the basic conversions until they demonstrate understanding.  In addition, students who grasp the ladder method of converting metric units may convert examples without using their ladder charts.  Students not grasping the ladder method may continue to use their charts until they grasp the concept.
