COMPARING FAMILIES IN ATHENS AND SPARTA

 

Athens and Sparta were two large and powerful ancient Greek city-states.  However because of the difference in Mycenaean and Dorian influences the two city-states developed separate customs and cultures.    Please click onto the site below and read about both the Athenian and Spartan family structure.  Answer the questions for each member of the family unit.

*Read the introduction to the story that is about to unfold. Today we are learning about family structure, we will continue to read the story about the war between Athens and Sparta at a later date

1.        When does Sparcus start school and what does the atmosphere of the school seem like?

     2.        What is the main focus of Sparcusâ education and what reward will he             receive if he passes his tests?

3.        How old is Patronius and how long has he been living in the barracks?

    4.        The battle of Salamis is a famous Greek Battle. Observe the battle scene,     what equipment did the soldiers have?

    6.        Why must Polonia be strong and what reward does she get at age

 You now have an idea of the Spartan family.  You will now compare that to the Athenian family structure.

 15.Describe the role that women had in Athenian society.

16.How many stories did Aesop write?  Have you heard any of his fables?   If so, which ones?
