Eligibility
To participate:
A. In order to qualify for participation, a student must earn a
grade of C- or above in all subject areas. During the final marking
period for any course, final grades will determine eligibility for
the next grading period.
Exceptions to this rule can include the following:
1. A student who earns a grade of D in one course for one quarter
will be placed on academic probation, but will still be permitted
to participate. If the student earns a D in any course during
the following marking period, the student WILL NOT be eligible
to participate
2. The principal may grant a waiver to this policy if a student
has demonstrated "extraordinary effort" and still has
not been able to achieve a grade of C- or above. Extraordinary
effort includes seeking extra help from the teacher at least once
or twice per week after class, taking advantage of extra-credit
assignments, and attending tutoring sessions with student volunteers
or with a teacher. The principal will rely on the teachers' evidence
to document extraordinary effort.
3. In some extreme circumstances, a student's health or family
circumstances (i.e., death of an immediate family member, divorce
in the family) during the marking period or preceding marking
period could suggest an acceptable reason for the school administration
to grant a waiver. Under these circumstances, the student may
present an appeal to the High School Principal for a one (1) marking
period waiver. To request a waiver, a student and his/her parents
must fill out a form available in the Main Office.
B. A student must take the required number of courses.
C. Academic eligibility of all students shall be considered as
official and determined only on the date when the report cards for
that marking period have been issued to the parents of all students
within a particular class.
D. Incomplete grades may not be counted toward eligibility.
E. A student who repeats work upon which he/she has once received
credit cannot count that subject a second time for eligibility.
F. A student cannot count for eligibility any subject taken during
summer vacation, unless that subject has been previously taken and
failed.
G. A student receiving services under Chapter 766 whose Individualized
Education Plan is a 502.4 or more restrictive prototype, may be
declared academically eligible by the principal provided that all
other eligibility requirements are met.
H. Participants of extracurricular activities must abide by the
high standards of citizenship.
I. Students must be present in school for the equivalent of four
periods or blocks to participate that day in extracurricular activities
and/or athletics. Exceptions to this rule must be approved by an
administrator.
J. Students tardy after 11:06 a.m. without a valid excuse will
be ineligible for extracurricular participation.
K. Disciplinary probation prevents a student from attending or
participating in any co- curricular activity.
L. To participate in or to attend any activity, game, practice,
play or other co-curricular activity, a student must be in attendance
for a full day of classes on the day of the event. If the event
is scheduled for Saturday, Sunday or a holiday, this regulation
shall apply to the last school day preceding the event. If a student
is ill or has some other absence excused by the principal or assistant
principal, he/she may participate in activities if he/she attends
two (2) or more consecutively scheduled classes on (or before) the
day of the activity. Exception will be made for absence due to religious
holidays.
M. All requirements for participation in interscholastic athletics
as prescribed by the Northeast Conference and the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association will also govern the eligibility
of students at Beverly High School.
N. At Beverly High School, rules of conduct apply to all co-curricular
activities. We are determined to sponsor teams and organizations
composed of young men and women who will represent our school with
pride, enthusiasm and loyalty.
