When most people talk about substance abuse, they are referring to the use of illegal drugs. Illegal drugs are not the only substance that can be abused. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines, inhalants and alcohol can all be used to harmful excess.

Substance abuse can lead to dependence or addiction.
